Historians agree that men’s neck ties originated in the 17^th century and whilst they served a purpose to tie the top of Croatian mercenaries’ jackets, they realised that they were also decorative and King Louis on the throne at that time, really liked this look, so much so that he made the wearing of a necktie mandatory for his Royal Court. So, the history of the necktie is a very British institution!
